Ethiopia hosting the Africa PFM Conference AND PEFA Flagship Training

The United Nations Economic Commission UNECA for Africa in conjunction with the World Bank and PEFA Secretariat is holding a conference and training on Public Finance Management (PFM) and The Public Expenditure and Financial Accountability (PEFA) and Financial Accountability in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 11-15 November 2024. 

In a statement published on its website, PEFA Secretariat stated that the conference is for its users, representatives of government, development partners, academia, and NGOs within African regions. UNECA noted the event will be both In-person and virtual and comprise of two distinct sessions to be held for five days. The first two days will be for the conference and three days for training.

Africa PFM conference will run from 11-12 November available both in-person and virtual sessions in English language.  After the first section, PEFA flagship training will start from 13-15 November 2024 which comprises specialized in-person training for designated participants only.

“This event aims to convene policymakers, practitioners, and experts in PFM and PEFA from across Africa to deliberate on recent advancements, share experiences, and explore innovative solutions for enhancing PFM systems. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, and workshops, participants will gain deeper insights into how effective PFM contributes to sustainable economic growth,” The UNECA statement read.

The purpose of the PFM and PEFA framework

PFM and PEFA together to promote better management of resources. PFM refers to the gathering, administration, and disbursement of public finance in a budget. Its work is to help promote efficient, transparent, and accountable use of public funds. In return, citizens benefit through good management of public money.   

On the other hand, the PEFA framework is a tool used in measuring and reporting public finance management performance. It helps to find out where there are strengths and weaknesses in the management of public resources. In a nutshell, PEFA acts as an indicator to government, international bodies, and NGOs by evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of PFM, leading to best practices.

The attendee of the conference is not being charged any fee for the conference and training; however, all related costs are the sole responsibility of the participants and the sponsoring organization.
