Toronto – It is not uncommon to read remarks that question whether Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s rhetoric about “Ethiopia’s Transformation” is an illusion.
For Abiy Ahmed, urban projects that brought about misery and existential threat for hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians or projects in regions intended to boost tourism are evidence that “Ethiopia is on a path to Prosperity.”
The security problem in many parts of Ethiopia which is crucial for the industry is non-issue. The problem is more than that. Devastating war that claimed thousands of civilian lives and made over 4 million children out of school is underway in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. A considerable part of the Oromo region of Ethiopia has been a conflict zone for nearly six years now. Now another war is looming in the north as the TPLF faction under Debretsion is actively making moves to start war in the west and south.
Economic ravage Ethiopians have been suffering from is only worsening – of course the few linked to power are getting richer and richer.
Yet, the Prime Minister was making a speech in a triumphant tone, during the second congress of the party he crafted six years ago, as if his party accomplished a positive milestone for Ethiopia. On the other hand Ethiopians are experiencing mass agony to the point that leaving the country by any means is a better option even when that entails danger.
Getnet Worku’s – Enat Party leadership – interview with Ethiopian Media Service seems to accurately capture the suffering Ethiopians are living. Take a listen and share your views in the comment section.
