Toronto – The chapter of Ethiopian History where the Ethiopian revolution dominated for 17 years has been controversial in many respects.

Many of the actors both in the government including Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam and opposition are still alive and have published so many books.

Berhanu Bayeh was one of the key actors. He has served in various capacities during Colonel Mengistu’s government ; chairman of the legal committee of Dergue, Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister – among other things.

He and a few others found themselves at the Italian Embassy when the TPLF took control of Addis Ababa and remained there for nearly three decades.

Colonel Berhanu Bayeh published a book entitled “ያልታሰበው” – about his life and participation in the Ethiopian revolution. Historians like Shiferaw Bekele believe that book is very useful for historians interested in researching the period. It has a very detailed account of the revolutionary era including.

His view of Colonel Mengistu is mixed. While he paints him as a bright man in terms of intellectual capacity, he also says he was ruthless.  Regarding Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam’s departure to Harare, he cited some arrangements for it to argue that his departure was planned and that he “ran away.”
