17 Other Civilians Killed in North Gondar, Amhara Region of Ethiopia

Borkena
Toronto – Four civilians were reportedly killed in drone attack in Ambassel district, South Wollo, Amhara region of Ethiopia. Local Ethiopian news sources reported that the victims were members of the same family, including three children.
There has been a pattern of drone attack casualties in many locations across the Amhara region, often involving members of the same family, signaling that residential homes are being targeted.
The incident occurred this past Thursday morning in the Jefgedo locality of the district. The attack deliberately targeted residential homes.
Residents from the area stated, “There was intense fighting in the area close to the town where the drone strike occurred.”
Borkena reported on Thursday about the intense fighting in Ambasel. The Ethiopian Defense Force had deployed mechanized units in addition to drones and airstrikes.
However, Fano forces managed to gain the upper hand in the fighting. At least one heavy artillery piece deployed by the defense force in the area was reportedly destroyed by the Fano forces, who were said to have held a better topographical position during the engagement.
According to a report from Ethio News, the government operation was triggered by an ongoing meeting of Fano leaders from different divisions operating in Wollo under the Amhara Fano in Wollo (also known as Bete Amhara).
The meeting, which reportedly elected leaders for a newly revised structure for this group of Fano, was not disrupted by the fighting. It is worth noting that there are other Fano groups that are not part of Amhara Fano in Wollo.
In a related development, government forces have reportedly massacred 17 civilians in North Gondar. The Amhara Association of America (AAA) cited sources from the region to report that the massacre took place on February 13 following intense fighting between Fano fighters and government forces near Tumet kebele, Metema Woreda.
This is an area where government forces have been striving to retake the corridor to the Ethio-Sudan border.
“The majority of the victims were women operating small businesses. Families were reportedly prohibited from retrieving and burying the bodies,” the AAA stated in an update shared on its social media page.
In addition to the civilian killings, government forces reportedly burned 12 motorcycles.
At the time of this writing, neither the Ethiopian Defense Force nor the Federal Government Communication Service has commented on the drone attack in Ambasel or the massacre of civilians in Tumet.
