Toronto – A bill aimed at deporting Eritrean migrants who support the Eritrean government has reportedly been introduced in the Knesset Plenum, The Times of Israel reported this week.

According to the report, the bill has already passed a preliminary reading in the Knesset Plenum with a 51-0 vote. Yisrael Beytenu MK Yulia Malinovsky, Member of Knesset, sponsored the Bill.

The Times of Israel quoted Malinovsky as saying, “I visited South Tel Aviv this week and was exposed to the chaos taking place there. The main perpetrators of crime are the Eritrean regime-supporting infiltrators.” She described the bill as “the first step toward restoring security and peace to the residents of South Tel Aviv.”

If passed into law, the bill would grant Israel’s Interior Minister the authority to deport Eritreans living in Israel who are linked to supporting President Isaias Afwerki’s government. Proponents of the bill argue that those who support the Eritrean government “have no reason to be seeking asylum in Israel.”

An estimated 20,000 Eritreans currently reside in Israel, according to the source.

The proposed legislation comes amid recurring violent clashes between Eritreans who support the government and those who oppose it. These clashes have reportedly resulted in fatalities, further escalating tensions within the community.

As of now, the Eritrean government has not yet remarked on the bill or its implications.
