Toronto – At least four civilians were reportedly killed in Ephrata Gidim, North Shoa, Amhara region of Ethiopia. Sources with links to Ethiopia revealed that the Ethiopian Defense Force carried out the attack on the night of February 7, around 5 A.M.

According to a report from Ethiopian Media Services (EMS), which spoke to a Fano spokesperson from the region, the attack targeted a residential home in Zenbo Kebele. Fano Adonay Abebe, head of Media communication for Shoa Fano, has confirmed the drone attack and the killing of civilians.

Four civilians died at the scene, including two members of the same family—a mother and her son.

A video footage aired by EMS on February 8, 2025, shows a mud house destroyed by the drone attack, with villagers gathering at the premises to grieve the deaths.

In addition to the human casualties, livestock on which families depend for their livelihood were also killed in the attack.

At the time of writing, the Ethiopian government has not commented on the latest drone attack in the Amhara region. The government has consistently denied targeting civilians and has downplayed the use of drones in the ongoing conflict in the Amhara region.

A study released in November 2024 by the Amhara Association of America, a U.S.-based advocacy organization, detailed civilian deaths in the Amhara region resulting from drone attacks and extrajudicial killings.

The study revealed that well over 100 drone strikes have been carried out in the region since the federal government began military operations in August 2023, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,200 civilians. However, some believe the actual number of drone attacks and civilian casualties could be higher, as incidents in the region are underreported due to a near year-long communication blackout, including internet shutdowns.

Reputable human rights organizations, both within Ethiopia and abroad, have documented recurring drone attacks in the Amhara region, raising concerns about the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
