Toronto – The Office of the Prime Minister on Friday issued a brief statement suggesting that Benalf Andualem has been removed from his position as Minister for Peace.

The announcement was made just two days after a leadership change was made to the Ministry.

“Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has made the following appointment as of Hidar 18, 2017 [November 27, 2024],” read the statement, which then provided details about the new appointee. Mohammed Idris is now in charge of the Ministry of Peace.

The Office of the Prime Minister did not disclose why Benalf Andualem was removed from the position or whether he would continue to serve in another capacity within Abiy Ahmed’s administration.

Benalf recently appeared in court to testify in the case of Taye Dendea, the former State Minister for the Ministry of Peace. According to local sources, Benalf testified in a way to explain why Taye Dendea possessed a firearm – which is apparently licensed. He was quoted as saying, “I know that Taye Dendea has a security problem.”

Taye Dendea was arrested in December 2023 on charges related to an alleged coup attempt. His arrest came two days after he made a critical remark about Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, describing him as a “ruthless person who plays with the blood of innocents.” After he was arrested, his family was evicted from government housing.

Benalf Andualem had been serving as Minister for Peace in Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government since 2021. His appointment was part of a broader cabinet reshuffle that included 21 other ministers, all sworn in by parliament.

The Ministry of Peace was established about a year after Abiy Ahmed became Prime Minister, in response to widespread security challenges involving ethnic violence, particularly in the Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz regions. Initially, the ministry was considered one of the most powerful government institutions, second only to the Prime Minister’s Office. However, the ministry’s influence and power diminished significantly within its first few years, with no official explanation or legislative changes to clarify the reduction in its authority.

  1. This official was relieved of his position just because he is a member of a Shoshone tribe. As you all know, Shoshones were the ones that founded modern Ethiopia in 1896. Hey, don’t start slinging mud at me for telling you that. That is what those bigots and connivers in Minnesota and Toronto told me. Don’t kill the messenger here.

  2. The Amhara forces or fano have branded this man and others working for the government or collaborators as bandas (traitors) and issued death penalities against them. TDF also punished collaborators as a lesson giving measure. The fano are brutal and will behead these collaborators.

  3. Hey y’all! He is coming here to be your mom and dad for the next few years. ‘He was removed’ you said, huh. Don’t you get tired of you eating your crow? From certain cabinet position that was rarely heard off to an ambassador to the most powerful nation on earth does not sound or look a pink slip. Say hello!!!
