Toronto – Abiy Ahmed led Prosperity Party is undertaking its second party congress in the capital Addis Ababa.

The party announced that it will be holding the congress for three days under the theme “From promises to culture.”

Abiy Ahmed and Adem Fara, deputy chairman of the party, have attended the opening ceremony of the party.

Prosperity Party claims to have over 15 million members across the country. A report Reuters published in 2024 indicates that the party has a “media army” – party members assigned in cybermedia to bully opponents.

Despite unprecedented economic, political and security challenges in the country, Abiy Ahmed’s party  claims his party is transforming Ethiopia to “prosperity.”

The party has noticeably lost legitimacy in areas where it used to have a strong support base. For example in the Amhara region, the government declared war in August 2023 under the guise of “disarming Fano Militants.”

Reports from reputable human rights organizations in the country and abroad indicate that thousands of civilians have been killed in the region in connection with the war. Humanitarian crisis is spiraling up.  Apart from Amhara, the Oromia region has been experiencing conflict for nearly six years now.

As well, reports from humanitarian organizations operating in the country indicate over 22 million Ethiopians are facing starvation and need emergency food aid.

In the economic front, the devaluation of Ethiopian birr in July 2024 – which was introduced as part of “homegrown” macro-economy reform, has reportedly led to loss of over 60 percent of savings of ordinary citizens. Furthermore, the Abiy Ahmed administration has reduced hundreds of thousands of residents in urban areas to homelessness and impoverishment as his administration forces “corridor development” projects.
