Forex: Ethiopian Banks paying higher rates for US dollar

Ethiopia’s state-owned bank – Commercial Bank of Ethiopia – is still paying lower for forex exchange compared to other banks in the private sector in Ethiopia.

Today’s buying rate from CBE was 122.59 for a U.S. dollar, and it was selling for 125.056

The rate for other major currencies is shown in the table below.

There are however private banks that pay higher compared to Commercial Bank of Ethiopia.

Abyssinia Bank and Awash Bank, among others, were paying over 123 Ethiopian birr for a U.S. dollar on December 5, 2024. Their rates for other currencies were also higher. However, there were also banks that paid even more on the same date.

Dashen Bank paid 124.7171 but it was also selling U.S. dollar at a higher rate – 127.2114.  Behran Bank, also private bank, paid over 124 but slightly (insignificant) lower than Dashen. On December 5, it was buying US dollar at a rate of 124.6435 and selling for 127.1364.

The daily Exchange rate reflects the exchange rate calculated by the National Bank of Ethiopia. Exchange rates fluctuate on a regular basis.
