What DEI means to us (By Addissu Admas)

It amazes me not a little that the worst president in the history of the American Republic, his most mediocre (at best!) cabinet of secretaries and the whole republican party believe that the mark of competence, expertise and professionalism is possessed only by those whose skin is white and their gender male. What amazes me even more is that legions of black and brown men voted for such a bigoted racist who has only shown contempt and disregard for their kind. Even if by some miracle, as these men “of color” believed, that their economic lot were to change for the better under him as he promised, would it be worth being insulted and degraded by this man and his followers? If that is so, then it would mean that black and brown men have lost their pride, dignity and worth for a pittance.

Republicans, and I care not here to distinguish whether of MAGA persuasion or not, have decided long ago that no black or brown person will ever acquire the competence, expertise or professionalism of a white male. Their publicly unuttered reason, but deep-seated conviction, is that black and brown folks are intellectually inferior to white men. It matters not to them what the facts show. They have to believe in the lie that they have created for themselves to justify their relevance, self-esteem, and most importantly, their place in the hierarchy of humans.

DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) never stood for lesser competence, expertise or professionalism. It only proposed that all these qualities being equally possessed by all applicants, the principle of proportional representation should guide hiring. Since we indeed are living in the most diverse country in the world, isn’t it logical that all the public spaces that we occupy in common should reflect this? The unstated but clearly intended objective in attacking DEI is to institutionalize the caste system that already exists in this country. I need not tell you which group is slated to occupy the top tier, which the second or third tier. You can very well guess. To be very clear, nobody has ever demanded that a white competent male administrator, educator, doctor, etc.…. be replaced by an incompetent member of a minority group. But this is how the Republicans frame it, and this is how they proclaim it to the rest of the world, to justify and implement their racist policies.

The irony of it all is that Donald Trump, the most incompetent of all presidents, has filled the federal government with individuals whose sole competence is being slavishly loyal and obedient to him, besides of course being in the majority white. He cares not one iota whether they are fit for the job or not because he knows that a bungler like him has made it to the top, i.e. to be president of the United States of America. And also, because he has convinced enough white people with chronic grievances that he was their “warrior, justice and retribution”. The problem is that black and brown men thought that they were included in this address. They did not understand that he had only white people in his vision for America. What black and brown men have demonstrated in fact is how ill-equipped they are in defending and promoting what is theirs to have.

No one should doubt that as long as this president and the Republican party manage to stay in power, which could very well be indefinitely, the human and civil rights of black and brown people will not advance an inch. The Republicans are conservative only in one sense: they want to conserve the good old caste system initiated by their forefathers. They are the dogged apologists of the status quo in race relations, the disparagers of truth-seekers who want to reveal the sins of the country, inventors of an imagined history, promoters of crony capitalism, and users and abusers of the Christian religion.

No right-thinking black or brown person should have any illusion that there is something for him or her in the “vision” of the Grand Old Party. The party by embracing white supremacists has told you that you are not welcome.

Rest assured that Trump will never do anything that will inconvenience, trouble or harm his MAGA whites. But he will have no problem dispossessing and damaging black and brown people. Never forget that this is the same man who went out of his way and took out full-page ads in several New York newspapers calling for the death penalty of five innocent black and brown teens. The so-called Central Park Five. As was suspected then and confirmed now, these young men never committed the rape and battery of the white woman. Even though they have been exonerated, and the perpetrator of the heinous crime is still serving time, Mr. Trump continues to repeat the same lie about them to this day. What this should clearly tell you is that this man sees the world with blinders: for him all the good in this world comes from white people and all bad things happen because of “colored people”. We have to say that he learned well from his nazi father!

Recently, when a helicopter, maneuvered by three white military personnel and a small commercial airliner piloted also by two white men collided in midair, Trump put the blame on some imaginary DEI hire. He was hoping desperately that at least the air traffic controller would have confirmed his false claim. To give a more charitable interpretation for why he lied, one could say that he was trying to cover up for his recent unexplainable bungling of the FAA. In reality, however, we must take it as his opening salvo in implementing project 2025 on the issue of DEI.

To all those black and brown people who voted for Trump for any one or two reasons, I say brace yourselves because a tsunami of laws and regulations targeting minority groups will be enacted to make your lives as uncomfortable and hard as possible.

Don’t think either that this is new in America. In fact, every time you think America is marching forward, atavistic forces thwart or even reverse the course. Similar things have happened in the past. Unfortunately, we are now experiencing a resurgence of what in the past has made America ugly. However, black and brown people should not let themselves be paralyzed by fear. They should assert their citizenship as much as the next white man. They should continue to use all the legal and societal tools to demand their rights. If these fail to succeed, they should flood the streets in peaceful protests and expose America’s injustice. I believe that black and brown people with other people of good can turn the tide before it is too late.
