Why Abiy Needed Gathering PP and Old OPDO GUARDS in Jimma? Perception is everything!

Abiy Ahmed _ jimma meeting _ Ethiopia politics

By Yayesew Dagnachew

In the past week, it was reported that Abiy Ahmed gathered a few of his new party, PP, cliques, and most of the older OPDO high-level officials in Jimma City, not far from his birthplace, Beshaha. One reasonable question is why he gathered all those old OPDO people in the vicinity of his birthplace at this very moment. The answer is simple for those who observe the development patterns in the country. A few of the main reasons are provided below. However, first, who leaked the information to the public and leaked the information to those social media platforms that have the highest audience and followers both inside and outside the country? The answer is simple. He himself sneaked out the meeting’s agenda in a way that would benefit him. As usual, the useful idiots will propagate his agenda effectively. Even those who oppose his government articulated it very well in a way that benefits him at this time.  Let us provide the motives why Abiy sent out his propaganda through his digital army.

  1. To control the potential resistance to his leadership created by Lemma Megerssa (PhD) and Mr. Jawar Mohammed.

By now everyone knows that Abiy Ahmed’s regime reigns effectively only in Addis Ababa and some few places in the country. His administration does not control more than 70 percent of the country at all. Abiy is comfortable with it. Like Bashir Al Assad of Damascus, it seems he wanted to stay like that in Addis Ababa building the palace that will bear his name for the coming generations, given if the next opposition force does not destroy his legacy from the country. Since there is a high probability that his name will be remembered as the Hitler of Ethiopia in the coming generations. The people might decide to eradicate all his legacy from the face of the earth.

Let us come back to the main reason why he sneaked out of the agendas of the meeting that gathered the old OPDO party’s main figures. A few weeks ago, by design or as a true force of opposition, the famous and influential Jawar Mohammed came out in the open as an option for the Oromo people if Abiy’s card expired to dominate the country. Jawar emerged from his negotiated silence after his release from prison, sharply criticizing Abiy and his leadership. It is also rumored that Lemma Megressa, one of the central figures, if not the main figure, led the movement that rooted out the TPLF leadership from Addis Ababa has joined forces with him. The coupling of Jowar and Lemma poses a permanent danger to Abiy and his leadership. He knows that the army, the security, the intelligence, the diplomatic front, and the propaganda can be out of his control in an instant. To stay on top of the agenda regarding who is the reliable leader, and at least to have the perception of having control of it, Abiy gathered all those who could be the main access points to Jawar and Lemma. He knows that if he loses this base, his days are numbered. So he quickly acted. Perhaps he will also spy on those people who are gathered there to see if they are loyal to him, as they might prefer Lemma or Jawar to take control of the existing ‘Oromo hegemony,’ replacing him.

  1. To appeal to the support of the Oromo Youth

The dominant philosophy that controls the government of Ethiopia is based on ethnic politics, as represented by the current constitution; it has been influenced by ethnic ‘elites’ since the time of the TPLF. Elites from one ethnic group dominate the government. There used to be elites from Tigray; now, they are elites from the Oromia region. However, the people in these regions are not the beneficiaries in general. It is the few cadres and their networks that dominate the leadership and control of the banks and tanks of the country. These ethnic elites convince the people that it is their turn to do whatever they want in the country. What we call in Amharic “Teregninet” — it is our turn to rule the country as we want — reflects a way of leadership philosophy that is not sustainable at all. Especially, the Oromo youth, ‘Kero’, used to follow Jawar Mohammed with their whole mind and soul. He is their leader. If that force follows Jawar, as they did in the past, Abiy can be gone in just a matter of a week. Therefore, Abiy has to try to appeal to the youth by demonstrating that in the past six years, he has done the best for them. Thus, Abiy wants to divide, if not minimize, the support for Jawar and his forces. The sneaked, narrated agendas were prepared in such a way that those youth will stay supporting him as in the past three years.

  1. To undermine those people who oppose him

The sneaky agendas do not favor him when it comes to the people’s perception of him from other regions of the country. However, he has already lost credibility and seems not to care much for that. As far as he is supported by his base, he thinks he can stay in power, even if it is in Addis Ababa. However, he wants to send the message that he is hurting the people in these different regions: Tigray, Amhara, Southern regions, and Gambela. It serves him as propaganda to create a winning perception. As a matter of fact, the weak may give up, but the strong ones may even be inspired to overthrow his wicked government, as it is the most lawless and weak government the people have seen in the history of the country. It is a matter of time before all the people gather against him and his government. But for now, he is trying to show off as if he is strong. But he is the most hated person in the country right now. His image and legacy is represented by the demon that comes out of the pit of the earth, for most people in the country. He has no chance to restore that wide acceptance he had at the start of his reign.  He looked like Engel, while he was the most wicked wolf in sheep’s clothing.
