Ethiopian Rebels operating in the Amhara region see inevitability of Abiy Ahmed’s gov’t downfall

Toronto – Ethiopia’s ruling party, Prosperity Party, concluded its fifth-anniversary celebration on Saturday at Adwa Hall in Addis Ababa. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the party president, and his deputy, Adem Farah, were among the attendees.
During the event, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made several claims, including highlighting what he called economic and political “successes” over the past five years. However, ongoing security crises, devastating internal conflicts, and the soaring cost of living—issues raised frequently by opposition parties and activists—were notably absent from his address.
Abiy painted an image of his party, which was formed five years ago from the now-defunct Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), as one rooted in “fraternity, truth, knowledge, and wisdom.” However, reports from Ethiopian and international media outlets often depict a starkly different reality.
The Prime Minister also referenced the ongoing conflicts across the country, stating that “rebel forces cannot win the war, even if they fight for 1,000 years.”
Less than a year after the war with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) ended in November 2022—an estimated one million people were killed during that conflict—Abiy’s administration initiated another war in the Amhara region. The stated objective was to “disarm Fano forces.” Meanwhile, the conflict in the Oromia region has been ongoing for nearly five years.
When the government declared a state of emergency in August 2023 to intensify its military operations in the Amhara region, it claimed the mission would be completed “within a few weeks.” Over a year later, the fighting persists, disproportionately affecting civilians.
Ethiopia’s Defense Forces have lost tens of thousands of troops due to the wars in many parts of the Amhara region, according to claims by Fano forces. The rebel forces are now estimated to number well over 400,000, with strongholds in Gojjam, Gondar, Shewa, and Wollo. Much of the Amhara region—especially in the countryside—is said to be under the control of Fano forces. It begs the question of whether the Prime Minister’s assessment of the rebel forces’ inability to win the war in 1,000 years is, at best, inaccurate.
Social media activists have questioned whether the administration underestimated the complexity of the war or deliberately misled the public to justify a prolonged conflict in the Amhara region.
Despite the Prime Minister’s dismissive remarks about opposing forces, Fano fighters appear to have grown stronger, acquiring more arms and influence. Many now foresee Abiy Ahmed’s downfall as inevitable. It is just a matter of time.
Abiy Ahmed’s administration, which started with widespread popularity five years ago, has seen its support dwindle. Critics argue that his rhetoric of national unity was a façade for advancing an ethnic Oromo nationalist agenda—a claim he denies. Abiy maintains that his goal is to build a “prosperous Ethiopia.” However, it is now evident that his administration has lost public trust and is facing a legitimacy crisis. The Prosperity Party, on the other hand, claims its membership has now reached 15 million.

President-elect Donald Trump said he would require countries that are part of BRICS — a China- and Russia-backed group of emerging economies — to commit to not creating new currency or face 100% tariffs during his administration.
“The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER. We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Saturday afternoon.

If the constitution allow every community to have it’s own defence forces , then FANO is fighting a justified cause because it is being illegally disbanded and discharged armed.
The constitution should rein in Ethiopia.
For anyone to lead Ethiopia in future, he or she should have humility to lead by others.

According to sources in the Tigray defense force (TDF) the oromo dominated government army is losing in the war in the Amhara region. The regional power Tigray is closely monitoring the developments and assessing the military situation in the Amhara region. Tigray has a redline and if the Amhara forces advance and threaten Oromia which is the gift of Tigray,TDF can deploy in Oromia and defend the Oromos.
You can dream to be the regional power but you don’t have the fact by your side. What makes you think so? Defeating Derg by the help of EPLF and the Amhara bandas? It is better to know your limitations because you can live in peace with your neighbors.
