Toronto – Eskinder Nega, Amhara Fano People’s Organization (AFPO) , on Wednesday released a video message in which he congratulated President Donald Trump for being elected as the 47th president of the United States of America and Senator Marco Rubio for being nominated as the next Secretary of State.
Yayehrad, a pro-AFPO activist, told Borkena via email that the organization led by Eskinder is active throughout the Amhara region. According to Yayehrad, it draws members from five Fano groups: Amhara Fano Shoa Teklay Gizat (Province), Amhara Fano Wollo Command, Amhara Fano in Gondar, Amhara Fano Gondar Command, and the Amhara Popular Force Army in Gojjam.
In the video footage that circulated on X (formerly Twitter), Eskinder is seen with bodyguards reading out the congratulatory message from unspecified location in Shewa area.
Pointing out that he is speaking “on behalf of the Amhara Fano People’s Organization (AFPO),” Eskinder Nega started by congratulating the American people “for a very successful election this year.”
He went on to say, “All sides conceded to a peaceful transfer of power. Such has been the legacy of the U.S. for over 200 years, and such has been the best gift each generation of Americans has bestowed on posterity.”
Furthermore, Eskinder read out his remarks about how his organization feels about the outcome of the election.
“We are delighted that we too, as the Amhara Fano People’s Organization, acknowledge its majesty and its example. We would also like to congratulate President Trump for being elected as the 47th president of the United States of America and wish him the best of luck in making America great again.”
Eskinder was clear that the agenda of “fairness” and “respect” are shared values. “The world has no quarrel with America that is great,” he added.
A day before his video message, another video footage was circulating on social media purportedly showing Eskinder Nega – who is currently in a battlefield in the Shoa area of the Amhara region – meeting with Senator Marco Rubio in the United States.
Eskinder confirmed it in his message.
Congratulating him on his nomination, Eskinder said in his video message, “I had the privilege of meeting with Senator Marco Rubio in Washington, and he was kind enough to squeeze me in between his very busy schedule and share his pragmatic vision of the world.”
He had more to say: “I am very happy to say that I share that vision of pragmatism and optimism, as well as the president’s vision of fairness and respect in world affairs…”
Background
As a young man, he lived in the U.S. for several years. After returning to Ethiopia, Eskinder Nega worked as a journalist, publishing his own newspaper in Amharic – Menelik. He had been arrested when the TPLF was in power due to activities related to practicing journalism.
Later, Eskinder transitioned to rights activism and even to party politics. Before he resorted to joining the Fano forces in the Amhara region to wage an armed struggle, he cofounded Balderas, a political party to defend the rights of residents of Addis Ababa. However, Abiy Ahmed’s government made peaceful struggle difficult, and Eskinder was arrested.
Currently, he is leading the Amhara Fano People’s Organization (AFPO) – in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

I don’t know about this photo. I really don’t know. Holding a ragged piece of paper to congratulate the newly elected president of the most powerful nation on earth? I really don’t know about this. But I do know one fact for sure. Amhara people are one of the most dignified people just like my Oromos and any other ethnic group in that country. Etiquette and official protocol is in their DNA. They deserve dignified leaders.
