Toronto – Debretsion Gebremichal, leader of one of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) factions, has reportedly announced on Wednesday that his party is launching a “peaceful struggle.”

“We have decided to launch a new peaceful struggle,” Debretsion is cited as saying during a meeting organized in Mekelle on Wednesday.

The meeting was with his faction’s senior leaders, according to sources.

The Debretsion faction’s new political struggle is described in Amharic as ‘Embi yemalet Zemecha,’ which could translate as “say no campaign.”

Debretsion Gebremicael highlighted in his speech that a consensus has been reached that the situation in Tigray calls for a “special struggle” and support (to one another), according to VOA Amharic report.

Last week, his faction accused the other faction, which is under the leadership of Getachew Reda, president of the Interim Administration of Tigray—a Pretoria Agreement arrangement—of “national treason” against Tigray.

Getachew Reda, on his part, accuses Debretsion’s faction of working to topple his government and preparing for war to bring the region on a collision course with the Federal government.

About two weeks ago, the two groups met in Addis Ababa in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The Prime Minister’s office decided that Getachew Reda’s group would remain as the Interim Tigray Region Administration until the next election in the region.

The first round of the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration program —another Pretoria Agreement Provision —  in the region is reportedly completed. The region claims that 75,000 combatants are disarmed and reintegrated into society—a program on which hundreds of millions of dollars were spent. There are still over 150,000 armed combatants in the region. The total number of armed combatants the TPLF disclosed before the DDR was over 250,000.

The Debretsion faction’s new “peaceful struggle” is unveiled at a time when three opposition parties operating in the region are accusing it of recruiting and arming youth—apparently a preparation for another round of war. The parties made the claim after assessing the situation in four zones of the Tigray region, according to the VOA Amharic report.

Relation with Eritrea

In recent weeks, reports have been emerging that the Debretsion faction is working with the Eritrean government—an allegation that is not denied or confirmed. However, the TPLF as an organization admitted that there was contact with the Eritrean government.

Not much is known about the nature of their relationship. However, there are speculations that the relationship is a sign of preparation to start a war—possibly against the Federal government.

  1. I am still hopeful that non TPLF group will led Tigray in the near future, these are cancers for Tigray and the whole region and they still get attention after they have done their best to destroy Ethiopia. I am trying to understand the society’s awareness level and I am sorry to say this the society is very far from basic awareness and that is very advantageous for TPLF to continue misleading Tigray….
