Toronto – For someone familiar with what is said to be one of the most bloody wars in the history of Ethiopia which is said to have claimed an estimated 1 million lives, the Federal Government’s decision to summon TPLF factions to Addis Ababa to deliberate their internal disputes appears surreal.
The development within TPLF in the post-Pretoria agreement initially manifested itself in the form violating the terms of the agreement including not disarming and forcefully invading areas and displacing resident in Raya area later transformed into what is appearing on the surface irreconcilable factional squabble within the Organization.
Yesterday, the Ethiopian Prime Minister, the defense chief of staff and many of his senior government officials sat for a meeting in the capital Addis Ababa with the antagonistic TPLF factions.
In the meeting, Getachew Reda represented the Interim Tigray Regional Administration as president, and he was appointed by Abiy Ahmed – in accordance with provisions of the Pretoria Agreement. Debretsion Gebremicael who is reelected as chairman of the TPLF in a controversial Party Congress in August this year represented the other TPLF faction which he leads. Tsadkan Gebretensae, former Ethiopian Defense Chief of Staff, who was also one of the top TPLF leaders but currently not a member of the TPLF organization, was also in attendance.
The meeting came a day after the Debretsion faction made a move to implement its decision that Getachew Reda is no longer the Interim President of the Tigray Region.
The meeting between the Federal government officials and TPLF factions took place in the office of the Prime Minister, Arat Kilo – a power center which the TPLF dominated for more than three decades.
The discussion highlighted the over situation in the Tigray region. Apart from the power struggle for regional administration which brought about political problems, there have been reports of a security crisis and unprecedented looting of the gold mining in the region. Both issues were discussed during the meeting.
According to sources close to media outlets from the Tigray region, both factions were pointing fingers at one another at the meeting in connection with the multifaceted problems in the region.
The meeting is given coverage by state owned media outlets.
According to sources. Getachew Reda accused Debretsion’s faction of obstructing the Interim Administration not to deliver on issues on which it was instituted for including “returning displaced people to their places.”
The other faction was asking the Federal government to remove Getachew from power. Debretsion reportedly described Getachew Reda’s administration as “weak.”
He also requested for “Tadesse Worede to be president of the Interim Tigray Regional Administration.” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reportedly rejected the proposal.
Furthermore, BBC Amharic cited sources to report that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed criticized Debretsion for “confusing the people in the region saying ‘Tigray army’ is with us.” He also reportedly criticized Debretsion’s faction for obstructing the works of the Interim Regional Administration.
The decision on the part of Abiy Ahmed is for the Interim Administration to remain in place and deliver on the mandates it is given until the next election. However, Debretsion’s group has reportedly remained persistent that Getachew be removed from the administration.
But later an agreement was reached for the two groups to work together, according to a BBC Amharic report. Returning displaced people and reintegrating TPLF combatants to civilian life are among the key tasks on which they will work together.
