Toronto –  Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is on a working visit to Ethiopia. He arrived at Bole International Airport Saturday in the afternoon.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed received him upon arrival at the airport. Somalia government sources say it was Abiy Ahmed that initiated Hassan Sheikh’s visit to Addis Ababa.

The Ethiopian government did not announce as to what the purpose of the visit was and how long the Somalian president will be staying in Addis Ababa. The two leaders met shortly after Somalia’s president arrived in Addis Ababa.

They have discussed “bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest. The Ethiopian government is claiming that the meeting was “constructive.”

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a joint communique highlighting the agreements reached during their meetings.

“They agreed to restore and enhance their bilateral relations through full diplomatic representation in their respective capitals. Furthermore, the two leaders emphasized the need for their diplomatic missions in multilateral   and regional forums to closely cooperate on matters of mutual interest,”  The communique reads.

Last year, Hassan Sheik Mohammed expelled the Ethiopian Ambassador from Mogadishu as a sign of protest against “violations of Somalia’s sovereignty.”

After a year long feud due to the Memorandum of Understanding the latter has signed with Somaliland, the breakaway region in the North, to gain access to the sea, it seems that the relation between the two countries is improving.

Turkiye mediated the Ankara Declaration which was signed on December 11, 2024 apparently paved the way for easing tension between the two countries.

Apparently, the Declaration was discussed in Addis Ababa. The joint communique referred to it.  “Finally,” it said, “they [leaders of the two countries] reiterated their commitment to the Ankara Declaration and the Spirit of friendship and solidarity that animates the declaration.”

However, it is unclear what Somalia is doing with the presence of Egyptian troops in Somalia, something Ethiopia was considering as a national security concern.

The fate of the tripartite agreement Somalia signed with Egypt and Eritrea in Asmara in October 2024 is unclear. It was largely seen as an alliance against Ethiopia although Eritrean president Isaias Afeworki declared the tripartite agreement is not against Ethiopia.

The Memorandum of Understanding Ethiopia signed with Somaliland on January 1, 2024 – which caused the diplomatic row and regional tension.

Abdirahman Dahir Adan, Somaliland’s new Foreign Minister, last week reportedly remarked that the MoU was not in the interest of Somaliland hinting that it will not have a future. There was no remark from the Ethiopian government.  Last year, Somaliland was given a plot of land in Addis Ababa to build for the construction of the embassy.

The territory declared independence 33 years ago after Somalia descended into civil war – and in many ways has functioned as a de facto nation-state ever since.
“Donald is our saviour. He is a wise and practical man. God bless America,” says university student Aisha Ismail, whose voice trembles with delight at the prospect.”The would-be African nation in love with Donald Trump BBC
