Toronto – Ethiopia’s Minister of Defense Aisha Mohammed is in Somalia, according to a Reuters report Thursday citing a senior government source in Somalia.

The source added that Ali Omar, Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, has confirmed it via a message to Reuters. However, the purpose of the visit is unspecified.

Reuters also said it contacted the Ethiopian government spokesman, but no response was received.

BBC Amharic cited Bloomberg to report that Ethiopia’s Defense Minister is discussing Ethiopia’s participation in the African Union new mission in Somalia,  AUSSOM ( African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia) which replaced  The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS)  this year.

Somalia has been discussing exclusion of Ethiopian troops in the peace-keeping mission on alleged grounds of violation of Somalia’s Sovereignty which is linked to the MoU cited above.

However, there were reports that Somalia is reconsidering the inclusion of Ethiopian troops in  AUSSOM  after the two countries signed the Ankara Declaration last month.

BBC Amharic cited Bloomberg which in turn cited Somalia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, as saying “The dispute between Ethiopia and Somalia is resolved.”

Ethiopia deployed about 3000 troops to Somalia as part of ATMIS and 7,000 other troops in a bilateral arrangement with Somalia with the aim to fight Al-Shabab Forces.

Following the diplomatic tension with Ethiopia, Somalia signed a military pact with Egypt which is poised to deploy 5,000 troops as part of AUSSOM and another 5,000 troops in a bilateral arrangement with Somalia.

Ethiopia and Somalia experienced a hostile relation throughout 2024 due to the memorandum of understanding the former signed with Somaliland which the latter saw as violations of its sovereignty.  Both countries are said to be working on improving their relations after the Ankara Declaration.

If Somalia’s reversal of its decision about excluding Ethiopian troops from  the new African Union mission is confirmed, it could be seen at least as a sign that the relation between the two countries is not worsening.

Somalia has signed a tripartite agreement with Eritrea and Egypt in October 2024 in Asmara in an apparent anti-Ethiopian coalition. The Eritrean president denied the deal was not anti-Ethiopian.  Last week, Somali President Hassan Sheik visited Eritrea which the Eritrean government portrayed as “a regular consultation.”

Saudi Arabia: “It’s like we are not human”: Forced returns, abhorrent detention conditions of Ethiopian migrants in Saudi Arabia
Since 2017, as part of a campaign to crackdown on undocumented migrants, Saudi authorities have arbitrarily arrested hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian migrants crossing the border from Yemen or residing in Saudi Arabia, held them in indefinite detention in inhuman and cruel conditions, subjected them to torture and other ill-treatment, and then forcibly returned them to their home country. These arbitrary arrests and subsequent treatment occurred solely because the migrants didn’t have valid residency documents, a situation exacerbated by the abusive kafala system in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia carried out at least 338 executions in 2024, sharply up on the 170 recorded in 2023 and the highest number in decades, the AFP tally showed.

Human rights group Amnesty International, which has been documenting executions in the kingdom since the 1990s, has said the previous highs were 196 in 2022 and 192 in 1995.
Convicted drug traffickers made up at least 117 of those put to death last year, the AFP tally showed.
There has been a flurry of executions of convicted drug traffickers since the kingdom ended a moratorium on the use of the death penalty for drug offences two years ago.
Foreigners made up 129 of the 338 people executed in 2024, another record.
They included 25 Yemenis, 24 Pakistanis, 17 Egyptians, 16 Syrians, 14 Nigerians, 13 Jordanians and seven Ethiopians.
In March 2022, Saudi Arabia executed 81 people in a single day for “terrorist crimes”, sparking international outrage.
Only China and Iran executed more people than Saudi Arabia in 2023, according to Amnesty, which has yet to publish its 2024 figures.

  2. For all of you bigots and connivers! This is very bad news for you. You have been dancing dagadash exaggerating dreamed up news that Somalia and Ethiopia are on the verge of going to war with each other. You have been fanning flames of imaginary war between these two fraternal people from your comfy homes here among the Diaspora. Ain’t gonna happen. Our patriot sister and Tayitu’s incarnate Defense Minister Aisha is in Mogadishu and has inked an agreement with Brother Hassan Sheikh Mohamud‘s government for Ethiopia and Somalia to work together in the peace keeping mission as sanctioned by the UN and AU. The other bad news for you is the government of Puntland has temporarily waved import taxes on trucks carrying goods coming from Ethiopia. So take this from me. Na, na, na, na nah! Eat your crow and die at your stinking joint in Minnesota, LA, Toronto, Oslo and Down Under!
