Toronto – Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, president of the Federal Government of Somalia, is in Eritrea again for the second time in under two months.

He arrived at Asrama International Airport Wednesday afternoon, according to Eritrea’s  Ministry of Information.  It is not indicated how long the “working visit” lasts.

The Eritrean president greeted him on arrival at the Airport. He was again received with a red carpet reception.

No further detail is indicated. What is known is that “the two Heads of State will discuss further  enhancement of bilateral ties as well as regional and international matters of mutual importance,” as disclosed by Eritrea’s Ministry of Information.

Villa Somalia or the Federal government of Somalia did not disclose further detail either.

SONNA, Somalia state owned media outlet, reported that “The two leaders are expected to engage in high-level discussions to further enhance cooperation between Somalia and Eritrea, focusing on areas of mutual importance to both nations.”

It views the visit as a testimonial to “growing partnership between the two countries as they seek to bolster ties and collaborate on pressing issues within the region and beyond.”

In October 2024, Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia signed a “tripartite agreement” in Asmara to cooperate in a range of areas including security in the region. At the time, the agreement was seen as an effort to isolate and weaken Ethiopia.

Somalia has been campaigning to isolate Ethiopia after the latter signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland on January 1, 2024. Apart from the tripartite agreement, it has signed a military pact with Egypt, who is seen by many Ethiopians as the archenemy of Ethiopia who has been supporting any hostile group against Ethiopia for ages.

There are also reports that Somalia has been working – with alleged support from Egypt – to destabilize the Somali region of Ethiopia by supporting local factions. And there have been rumors that Mustafa Mohammed, president of the Somali region of Ethiopia, is clandestinely working with Hassan Sheik Mohammed’s government but there has been no clear evidence for that as yet. However, there were developments this week that Somali regional state security forces attacked the Issac tribes and many are reportedly dead. It has infuriated Somaliland. The Ethiopian government is yet to remark on it.

Two weeks ago there was hope that the tension between Ethiopia and Somalia became a thing of the past as Turkey, also Somalia’s Military ally, managed to broker the Ankara Decorrelation.  As it turns out, it rather appears to be a political maneuver. The Abiy Ahmed Administration seems to be relentless in its military operation in the Amhara and Oromia regions as Somalia juggling a number of things at a time including within the Ethiopian border.

Hassan Sheik Mahamed’s Wednesday visit  to Asmara came just within two days of a diplomatic engagement to Cairo and Addis Ababa. While Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Somalia’s Foreign Affairs Minister headed to Cairo where he met with Badr Abdelatty, his Egyptian counterpart, another Somalia diplomatic mission under the leadership of Ali Mohamed Omar, Somalia State Minister for Foreign Affairs was in Addis Ababa.

This same week, two weeks after the Ankara Declaration, Somalia was accusing Ethiopia of “attacking Somalia ‘s military bases in Doolow.”
