Toronto – A razing fire has reduced a business building in Shema Tera,  Merkato locality of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. According to sources, the fire started around 7 p.m. local  time. The blazing fire was controlled around 11 P.M.

However, reports indicate that fire fighters continued to work overnight to ensure that the fire is not starting again.

Fana Broadcasting Corporate, state media, reported that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

In spite of the total destruction of an entire building, no deaths are reported at the time of this writing. However, Addis Ababa police reported seven light injuries and two serious injuries.

Addis Ababa police also announced that it is teaming up with the Federal Forensic Unit to investigate the cause.

In addition to Addis Ababa City Fire and Disaster Management Commission, the Federal police, Addis Ababa Police, Defense Force, Republican guard and National Information and Intelligence service were deployed to the area “to prevent other crimes due to the accident and to help facilitate the fire fighting work for the city’s fire crew.”

Addis Ababa Police claims that it has arrested 33 suspects who were allegedly involved in theft exploiting the situation.

Conversations on social media regarding the accident indicate that Addis Ababa City Fire and Disaster Management Commission arrived late to the scene.

There are also speculations among those critical of Abiy Ahmed’s  government that the fire incident is likely a work of the ruling Abiy Ahmed’s Oromummaa force for ideological reasons.

There have been allegations that Abiy Ahmed’s government undertook the “corridor development project in Addis Ababa” with the aim to uproot native Addis Ababans from their land holdings as part of “Oromizing the city.”  The fire incidents since Abiy took power are seen in the same light ; an act of uprooting Addis Ababans and economically reducing them to nothing.

Addis Ababa has experienced recurring fire accidents in different parts of the city especially over the past six years, triggering speculations that the incident is Abiy Ahmed’s government making.

Getu Seyoum is DW Amharic reporter. He has been gathering information regarding the accident. However, individuals who identified themselves as authorities in the area have deleted the information the reporter gathered on the fire incident.
