Toronto – The Fano forces in the Amhara region of Ethiopia released a statement on Monday warning against a move by the ruling Prosperity Party to organize rallies in major cities across the region.
The rallies are reportedly intended to condemn the Fano forces and call for “peace” in the region. According to statements from the rebels, these events are planned for this week.
The rebels expressed concern that the government might orchestrate attacks on civilians during the rallies and later blame the incidents on what it calls “extremist” forces—a reference to Fano.
“The struggle Fano is undertaking is a popular movement intended to reverse existential threats. This decisive struggle is meant to address the people’s demands,” reads part of the statement released by the Gojjam Fano forces.
The Fano forces allege that the government is coercing residents to participate in the rallies to condemn the movement. They urged residents in the region to reject the ruling party’s political maneuver.
“To accept the invading army’s call and be part of the Prosperity Party’s drama is an act of treason against the existential struggle of the Amhara people,” the statement declared. It also warned that individuals participating in such events would not be absolved from historical and moral accountability.
The Fano forces further cautioned individuals engaged in smear campaigns against what they described as a justified struggle, stating that “appropriate measures will be taken.”
The rebel forces are active across the region’s traditional four major provinces: Gojjam, Gondar, Shewa, and Wollo. Multiple Ethiopian news sources with links to the region report that much of the Amhara region—especially smaller towns and rural areas—remains under the rebels’ control.
For over a year and a half, the Ethiopian government has conducted many large-scale military operations in the region with the stated objective of “disarming the Fano forces.” However, the Fano forces have reportedly received extensive support from residents within and beyond the region, allowing them to foil several military operations and emerge better armed.
Observers and activists attribute Fano’s success to widespread grassroots support for the rebel forces.
The Ethiopian government has yet to respond to the allegations made by the rebel forces.
Restrictions on Vehicle Mobility Lifted in Some Areas, Introduced in Others
Meanwhile, the Gojjam Fano announced that it has lifted vehicle mobility restrictions in Gojjam, which had been in place for about a week. The regulation was initially introduced in response to the latest round of massive government military operations in the area.
“During this time, we minimized civilian casualties and carried out impressive operations,” said Asres Mare Damtie, the political head of the Fano forces in Gojjam, in a social media post shared this week.
On the other hand, Fano forces in Shewa announced on Tuesday a three-day restriction on vehicle mobility in that part of the Amhara region. This move follows reports of intense fighting in the Ataye and Shewarobit areas, both in Shewa.
