Toronto –  In the latest string of massive civilian executions, Ethiopian government soldiers have allegedly executed 10 farmers in North Mecha, Gojjam area of the Amhara region.

Ethiopian Media Services (EMS) on Monday cited sources from the area to report that the incident occurred on January 31 in Enashenefalen Kebele, Gosher locality.

The source said that the farmers were taken out of their homes and executed in the open air.  It is said that the victims were laid to rest on February 1st at the Gesher Mariam church in the area.

The location where the execution took place is said to be in close distance to the regional capital, Bahir Dar.  Last week, Fano forces announced that they undertook a military operation in the Bahir Dar area.

There have been several cases whereby government  forces execute civilians following  a battle loss to Fano forces.  The rebel forces have a massive grassroot support in the region.

The source added that it reached out to government officials in the area to get their remarks. The efforts were unsuccessful.

Reputable human rights organizations have reported recurring  extrajudicial executions in many areas of the Amhara region since the government deployed forces in August 2023 with a stated objective of “disarming the Fano forces.” Ethiopian Human Rights Commission was one the human rights organizations but the government recently appointed a commissioner that is said to be a stooge for Abiy Ahmed’s administration.

Apart from mass killings, the government is implicated in isolated executions of civilians including the  professionals. The latest incident involving the killing of a surgeon in Bahir Dar is linked to the government.

The Amhara Association of America on Sunday released a statement saying the surgeon was killed by Ethiopian government soldiers. Police in Bahir Dar claimed that the perpetrators of the attack are “unidentified gunmen” and that investigation is underway to establish their identity.

The Amhara region has suffered rising human rights violations which are usually underreported due to restrictions to journalists and  human rights organizations.

Apart from rights violations, civilian institutions including health centers and schools have been targeted with drone attacks and artillery shelling.  Schools are closed in many parts of the region.  Well over 4 million students are said to be out of school due to the ongoing conflict.

Yet, the prospect of  an end to the conflict in the region anytime soon appears to be unlikely. The government named its own mediators to reach out to the Fano forces.
