Toronto – This week the Ethiopian Defense Force was painting an image that Fano forces are significantly downgraded to the point that they are now operating as bandits in mountain areas (The story is available here)
On the other hand, Fano forces who are still said to be in control of most parts of the Amhara region of Ethiopia are rather making a claim that seems to dismiss the government narrative.
In his latest interview with Ethiopian Media Services (EMS), Marshet Tsehaytu, spokesperson for the Amhara Fano in Gojjam, said there was fighting near the regional capital Bahir Dar from three directions. The fighting took place on Saturday.
The spokesperson also said that the government has suffered significant losses in the hours-long battle. About 31 government forces were killed and nine captured. One of those killed was a senior military commander at the level of colonel but his identity was undisclosed.
Marshet estimates the number of government forces deployed to the region since August 2023 as 200,000. The figure is not verified and the defense force has not yet remarked on Fano claims of significant military gain in Bahir Dar area.
