Toronto – Brigadier Gen. Kebede Regassa, high ranking Ethiopian military commander, who made what turned out to be a popular remark during a second forum organized by the Ethiopian parliament under the theme “Dialogue for Durable Peace and Prosperity” is making headlines.
Parliamentarians including the Speaker of the House of People’s Representative, Tagesse Chafo, Tesfaye Beljige (State Minister at the Ethiopian Parliament), and a few opposition voices – among others – attended the discussion.
Brig. General Kebede Regassa spoke about the sacrifices the defense force has been making in the country and abroad, and about the need for that to end.
“… it is not just here that we are spilling our blood. We go to other country and spill [our] blood. Based on the command and mission you gave us. Therefore, we ..,hereafter… we [the defense force] do not want to spill our blood and do not want our people to be in chaos and spill blood, pay sacrifice. Sit have dialogue and resolve your problems,” he said
Therefore, he added, “this is the voice of every single Ethiopian soldier. We must make all contributions to this national dialogue. “
The General also made remarks to dispel the view that the defense force is serving the government in power, not the Ethiopian people.
“We are not loyal to anyone. We are for the people and for the constitution. it is for that that we pay in life.” It is apparent that the Defense Force has lost the respect and affection it used to have particularly after the massive deployment of forces in the Amhara region where there has been rampant extrajudicial killings and massacre of civilians.
The Defense Force was deployed to the Amhara region after Abiy Ahmed’s administration declared a state of emergency in August 2023 with a stated objective of “disarming the Fano forces.”
The same military operation that was “planned” to be completed in a matter of weeks is still underway in the region, crippling the economic and social lives of people in the region apart from loss of lives ; not just combatants and government soldiers but also civilians. A significant portion of the Oromo region of Ethiopia has also been a conflict zone for more than six years now. It started after in 2018 Abiy Ahmed’s government invited armed ethnic Oromo nationalists operating in Eritrea to return to Ethiopia to embark a “peaceful struggle”
Last week, Let. General Alemehste Degfe, advisor to the Defense Chief of staff, remarked during an interview with the Defense media, that the defense force is exhausted from extended missions to control domestic problems in many areas of the country , and hinted that it might withdraw from the Amhara region. However, a day after his remark Minister for government communications, Legesse Tulu, made a contradictory statement when he said that the defense force will not withdraw from the region.
