Toronto – Orchestrated attacks against followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church have been intensifying in many areas of the Oromia region of Ethiopia, and the violence shows no signs of abating.
In the latest wave of attacks, this time in Jimma, over 2000 homes and businesses belonging to followers of the church have reportedly been destroyed.
According to Mahibere Kidusan, a credible Ethiopian church news source, the incident occurred this week in the Gera district, specifically in Walle Kebele and Bore Town.
Eight churches in the district are reportedly facing serious threats, while in Walle Kebele and Bore Town, as many as 2000 homes and business stores were burned after arsonists set them ablaze.
The source added that members of the Defense Force and security forces have been deployed to the area. However, the situation was not under control at the time of writing.
Residents have reportedly fled to neighboring areas in the South Ethiopia region.
It remains unclear who is behind the latest targeted attack in Jimma. However, there have been several similar attacks against Orthodox Christians in the area in the past.
Many of the previous attacks were reportedly linked to the militant group known as the Oromo Liberation Front (OLA). There have also been unconfirmed reports suggesting that a radicalized Islamic group operates under the cover of the OLA.
At the time of writing, neither the Jimma Zone government communication office, the regional government, nor the Federal government has commented on what appears to be the largest orchestrated attack against Orthodox Christians in recent times.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has yet to confirm the story as of this reporting.
